 Things We're Thinking About

April 27, 2020
Finding Our Way Forward

Last week, Governor Walz announced  Executive Order 20-40 outlining steps for the MN workforce to begin moving forward today - including manufacturing and office space.  This news took me by surprise.  While I've spent weeks dreaming of the day that we would be released back to our "old life", the reality of returning felt overwhelming.  We are not returning to the life that was.  We are returning to something new.  Things have changed.  Preparedness Plans, Health Checks, and COVID policies, are now the way forward.

When experiencing transition, even the positive steps forward can paralyze us at times.  I was in that place last Friday.  So, what can we do when we're stuck?  Here are a few tips that we utilize to move ahead and continue finding our way forward:

  • Make space to process and reflect.  Taking time to reflect, provided me with the mental space to identify specifically why I felt overwhelmed.  Identifying the driving forces to my overwhelmedness allowed me to break it down in a way that I could determine action steps addressing each of the specific areas feeding the paralysis.
  • Write it down.  As I identified the drivings forces behind my overwhelmed feelings, I wrote them down.  The act of moving the circulating thoughts from my brain to paper, creates the first actionable step to move the brain forward.
  • Brainstorm possible solutions.  Once I identified and broke down the areas driving what overwhelmed me, I could evaluate possible solutions one area at a time.  Starting with one identified area, I brainstormed and listed all possible action steps and solutions that came to mind.  I allowed myself space and grace, and gave my mind a break and did not brainstorm all areas at once.
  • Prioritize and plan.  Once I had a list, I could prioritize and plan.  Reviewing the brainstorm list, what steps do I need to take in order to continue doing business in COVID times?  What steps are critical for the safety of my clients?  These are my most critical steps, and move to the top of the action plan.  I re-ordered the brainstorm list from most important to least, setting target dates to focus my direction forward.
  • Call in reinforcements.  Sometimes the steps on the list are outside my scope, my skill set, or my available time - and so reinforcements are needed.  Every one of us has our areas of strength and our areas of weakness.  We're all only human.  I'm thankful for those who fill in my gaps.

We are all navigating challenging times.  I have been encouraged by all the goodness, innovation, and resilience expressed around us daily.  I have great hope for the days ahead, and also know that our days post-COVID will look different than our days pre-COVID.  If you are struggling or feeling overwhelmed - we are here.  As with any transition, we're in this with you.  Contact us if we can help.

COVID- 19 Transition Tools
March 30, 2020
During the first 2 weeks of COVID-19 isolation, we found ourselves scrambling to understand a bazillion changes around us.  NOW - we feel like we are working hard to keep all the balls in the air - tracking and managing all the things now on our plate that weren't there before.  With the new roles and responsibilities, we have found that good tools have become even more important.  Here are a few that we find helpful - maybe you will too:

Zoom

Zoom offers free accounts for video conferencing and connection - and is easy to use!  It is a great way to connect with co-workers, family, and friends.  All you need is a smartphone, tablet, laptop or desktop with a webcam.  Download the Zoom software from zoom.us or the app from your device's app store.  Or, you can join a Zoom meeting from a Zoom invite sent to you by someone else.  Free Zoom accounts allow for 40 minute sessions.  If the free option does not meet your needs - there are additional plans available to increase your services.

Google Hangouts Meet

Google Hangouts is another way to connect over video.  Hangouts has a free version available, but the tool has not typically been as robust as Zoom.  Due to COVID-19, Google has rolled out additional advanced features through Hangouts to provide additional opportunities to connect.

Slack

Slack is a chat tool that gives you the ability to create a variety of different channels, so your conversations can be organized by topics and/or teams.  The goal of Slack is to increase productivity by simplifying communication, helping teams to collaborate across remote distances.  Slack integrates with Google Drive, Microsoft OneDrive and Dropbox.

Monday.com

Monday.com allows you to work remotely and effectively. With this tool you can organize and track team projects, manage workload, track time, and more.  Utilize Monday.com to build workflows and run your projects and processes with confidence from home.

Asana

Asana is a tool designed to organize, track and manage the work and projects of teams (work and home).  This tool allows teams to manage work anytime, and anywhere, while keeping everyone focused on goals, projects and tasks.  This tool is very easy to use and implement.

Hubspot

Hubspot is an all-in-one software platform built to help you drive marketing, sales and customer service.  It’s products and services provide tools for customer relationship management, social media marketing, content management, lead generation, website analytics, and SEO.

Resilience
March 26, 2020

We are about 15-ish days into our COVID-19 isolation here in the Midwest.  It felt harder this week than last.  In the midst of all the hard stuff, what stood out most prominently in these past 15-ish days is the RESILIENCE displayed all around us.  While each day seems to bring a new surprising layer of uncertainty, we see people continuing to step through the uncertainty and toward one another.  You inspire us.  Is there fear?  Yes.  Grief?  Absolutely.  Name any of the emotions - we are all feeling them.  Yet, through all that we are feeling, the things we see rising to the top are:   Innovation, Creativity, Togetherness, Kindness, Love.  There is much unknown remaining ahead, but let's continue showing up - together!  As with any transition, if we take it one step at a time, we might just be amazed at our transformation on the other side.  We can do this!

    An Unprecedented Transition

    March 18, 2020

COVID-19 is bringing an unprecedented WORLDWIDE transition.  Our everyday realities have significantly changed, and it feels hard.   As we face the unknown of COVID-19, there are many ways we can be together in this.  Our togetherness (at a physical distance) will be what sees us through.  So much of H20's daily practice with clients - applies to ALL of us now!  Below you will find a few small tips for all of us to keep in mind as we navigate our COVID-19 transition.

    Tips for Families

    1.  Make a daily plan.  Develop a structured schedule for your day.  In times of chaos it can be hard to stay focused.  Creating a plan for your day can help keep you moving forward despite the chaos around you.  If you don't stick to the plan one day - that's ok - you've got tomorrow to try again.

     2.  Create connections.  We need one another during these times - just like any transition.  Find ways to connect with your community consistently.  Play charades with cousins over FaceTime.  Call Grandparents.  Enjoy virtual happy hour with friends over Zoom.  And - ask for help when you need it.

     3.  Find opportunities for self care each day.  There is so much out of our control right now.  Finding ways to take care of yourself makes you better equipped to care for your loved ones.  Take a walk.  Find ways to fuel your body well.  Look for free online exercise courses.

     4.  Look for opportunities to express gratitude each day.  It has been proven that focusing on gratitude, diminishes anxiety and opens opportunities to experience joy.  Even now, find ways to look for things - big or small - that bring some positivity to each day.

     5. Take things one day at a time.

    Tips for Small Business

    1.  Exhibit leadership.  Providing leadership and guidance in your business is especially important in stressful times, and we think we can call these times stressful.  Bring confidence to your clients and team by displaying authentic leadership.  None of us have the answers right now, but we can certainly work toward finding solutions together.

     2.  Find creative ways to connect with your clients and team.  Most of us find ourselves working from our new makeshift "home offices".  Have you tried connecting with clients over Zoom, Google HangOuts, Conference Call, Facetime?  Stay connected utilizing these tools - and have some fun together!

     3.  Connect with clients.  Maintain a strong and positive communication channel with your customers. Be honest and reassuring about the steps you are taking to continue meeting their needs safely.

     4.  Set goals that can be adjusted as needed.  You might be saying "Goals?!  My only goal is to make it through this day!"  And we are right there with you!  But, as we adjust to this "new normal" start to develop some basic goals to focus on during this time of transition.  Be flexible to adjust your goals as the realities of the COVID-19 play out over time. Continuing stepping forward, one step at a time.

     5.  Take things one day at a time.
